How did it get there ?
Français
Haiti Medical
Page has been online since 1997, without interruption. Initially
the initiative of one individual, it very soon became a collaborative work involving not
only individuals with different skills (physicians, programmers etc..) but
also different partner organization.
The first
milestone was the searchable online physician directory.
This is a unique database of Haitian physicians in Haiti and abroad
continuously in construction thanks to the nature of the internet. It is
available to any visitor in a password protected area. While the database had
most of the basic information (name, class etc...), information such as
address and phone numbers are usually provided by the physician himself.
With the help
of different webmasters, the backend of the site received a major overhaul in
order to make it as automated as possible. There is very minimal human
involvement in the day-to-day management of this website. This was the only
way to keep our operating cost as lean as possible. The forum, the
classified section, the chat, the mailing-list system, the
survey, among other features, were added in order to give the visitor
the opportunity to interact with others.
The
time-honored Haitian Medical Association (AMH), the Haitian
Gynecological Society (SHOG) were invited to take advantage of the
infrastructure of haitimedical.com and responded favorably. The monthly
newsletter of the AMH has been published on a regular basis since
September 2001 on the AMH website at
http://www.amhhaiti.org or
http://haitimedical.com/amh . SHOG has recently published its first
newsletter at http://www.shog.org. An agreement with the Association of
Haitian Physicians Abroad (AMHE) has made our technical team available to
this actively growing organization. Their website is available at
http://www.amhe.org
or http://haitimedical.com/amhe.
A site has also been set up for GHESKIO (Groupe Haitien d'Etude du
Sarcome de Kaposi) and is visible at
http://haitimedical.com/gheskio . Other medical societies and
organizations have either been invited or manifested an interest to join this
symbolic, historical and unprecedented effort.
An agreement
with the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) has put Haiti
Medical in charge of the French version of the amfAR Treatment Insider, a very
informative bymonthly newsletter. Les Perspectives Therapeutiques de
l'amfAR are now available at
http://haitimedical.com/amfar.
Some
individuals and businesses have sponsored specific activities, like our first
annual Contest,
which is bringing specific public health issues to the attention of the
general public. We are able to keep our operating cost at an affordable level
with strategic partnerships and cooperative work. We will
continue to seek synergistic interactions with similar or very different
organizations in order to continue to provide relevant information and
references on health issues about Haiti or about Haitians.
